Travel to Greece section will eventually cover all touristy areas of Greece!

Athens

Athens PictureAthens is the capital and largest city of Greece, the birthplace of democracy and also home to some World Heritage Sites. In Greek it is pronounced as Αθήνα (Athína). The Olympic Games were held in Athens in 2004. The population is about 3,700,000. The time in Athens is + 2 hours from Greenwich Meantime (GMT).

Flights to Athens from USA, Europe and Australia

There are direct flights to Athens via the USA and in various countries from Europe. If you are flying from Australia, you will have to do at least one stop, perhaps in Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand. Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in Spata is the main airport of Athens. It is located 33km southeast of Athens and is easily accessible via Attiki Odos, a six-lane motorway constituting the Athens City Ring Road.

If you live in Europe, an alternative to travel to Greece is to drive. The shortest ferry trip is from Brindisi. A slow ferry will take about 15 hours to Patras and 8 hours to Corfu. There are also ferries from Bari which take a little longer. The Ancona ferries take about 22 hours to Patras. There are ferries from Venice and Trieste too and these take about 36 hours. If you are taking a train it is easier to go from Slovenia via Belgrade and Skopia to Athens.

Public Transport in Athens

Public transport to Athens is provided by metro, railway and buses. If are only going to visit the city centre, it is sometimes quicker to walk to take a taxi.

When to Come to Athens, Greece

The best time to visit Athens is in Spring and Autumn. Avoid July and August, it can be very hot.

Sightseeing

Top sites worth seeing in Athens:

1. Acropolis

The Acropolis Museum is located on a large hill lies in the centre of the city and contains a cluster of ancient ruins. It considered as one of the most important museums in the world. It is the  most famous site in all of Athens.

2. Plaka area

Plaka is a 19th-century neighbourhood which was once strictly working class, but thanks to careful, historically accurate renovations, it is now one of the most exclusive addresses in Athens. Quaint, narrow streets are lined with cafes, souvenir shops and boutiques, attracting folks with a wealth of merchandise and energy.

3. Kolonaki

Kolonali is Located on the lower slopes of Lycabettus. This chic region is best known for its elegant shopping.

4. Lykavitos Hill

Lykavitos Hill is the location of Athens' tallest hill is accessible by cable car or on foot. A small, beautiful church at the top provides sightseeing opportunities and great views. If you're walking up, rest and refresh at the halfway point, where a café boasts an eye-level view of the Acropolis. A restaurant at the top serves visitors who take the easy way up. The "Hill of the Wolves," as the name translates, is the best place in Athens to see both sunset and moonrise.

5. National Gardens

The National Gardens is a  large park and was once the king's private gardens. It is now free and open to the public. Wander among trees and flowering shrubs or visit the small zoo.

6. Piraeus

Piraeus is a the Athens main port. Here you can get ferries to the outer islands. The town itself has some of the best seafood restaurants in Athens. It is also nice to water around the waterfront.

7. Syntagma Square

Syntagma Square is the largest and the most important square in Athens. It houses the monument of the Unknown Soldier, the Parliament and the most luxurious hotels of the city. It is worth watching the soldier on duty.

Greek Islands: Santorni, Rhodes, Crete, Kefalonia, Kos, Zakynthos (Zante)

Mainland: Kavala, Meteora, Mount Athos, Halkidiki.

How to get there:

If you are flying to Greece via Athens or Thessaloniki. You can access Greece from Europe via Serbia and Bulgaria and you can travel also from Turkey.
