A CV or curriculum vitae is used when applying for a job. It is best to get the CV typed. The CV needs to include your job history and education history. A CV needs to be written in a formal way and to not include slang. The CV needs to be well presented with the information not too cramped - need white space so it is easy to read. The following are some Curriculum Vitae tips that I hope will help you.

Type of Curriculum Vitae to write?

Before you starting writing your cv, sit down with a piece of paper and write down all the key points you believe are necessary. Also ask your friends for their opinion.

Writing the Curriculum Vitae

Please note that different countries have different ways of writing a CV. The following are ideas in how I would write it:

-   Full Name
-   Address
-   Phone number
-   Email address
-   Date of Birth
-   Nationality

Education and Qualifications

-   Name of Primary School.
-   Name of High School
-   Higher education if you have completed it.

Work Experience:

-    Company name and address with a short description of the company
-    Contact name / phone number
-    Job title
-    Description of responsibilities

Computer Skills

-    List of computer programs you can use e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint etc.

-    Level of competency (basic, intermediate, advanced)

Personal Information:

-      Achievements
-    Hobbies/Interests
-    Membership of clubs and professional bodies
-    Language(s)
-    Driving licence

More Tips

Your CV is your marketing tool so it is best to emphasise what type of job you are looking for. For example, if you are going for a labour /construction, then a degree would not be that important, whereas experience in the job may be more relevant. If you feel your work experience is more important then list this. On the other hand if you feel your educational skills are more important, then mention these first. Start with the latest job.

If you do not have an email address, you can get a free email address at yahoo.com or hotmail.com.

If you belong to a professional association or have received, awards, certificates and if you have a car licence, then mention them. You do not need to include a photo unless it has been requested. In addition it is not necessary to list your salary history. I normally add two references to a Curriculum Vitae. In some countries or circumstances, references can be shown to the employer during or after an interview. Also useful to mention is if you can speak another language, that skill may be useful in some positions.

What if you have never worked?

One idea is to ask a company if you can work for them as job experience for a few weeks. This could be a handy way of getting on the ladder. Also try job agencies online and offline. Short Term Temporary jobs if you can get them would be useful to start your experience.

Finishing Touches

When you finish writing your cv, check for spelling or grammar errors. Use high quality paper to print your CV. Try to keep your CV to a maximum of two A4 pages, unless otherwise requested. If you are going to post your CV, then use an A4 envelope so you don't  have to fold it.

Applying for jobs can be difficult and I thought the above tips may be useful. If you have any additional suggestions for this page, please email via contact info. Good luck in getting a job.
