PS3 is 35 times more
powerful that the PS2. The design of the PS3 is based on the Cell processor
which was jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM. Each cell chip has one
Power Processing Element (PPE) which acts as the system's CPU. There are
eight Synergitic
Processing Elements (SPEs- co-processors), each more powerful than the CPU.
Each SPE along with the PPE runs at 3.2 Ghz and combined they're capable of
over 218 Gflops of performance. Gflop (Gigaflop) stands for a 'billion
floating point operations per second'. There is a 512 mb ram split between
the graphics chip and the console.

PS3 will be
backwards compatible with all existing Playstation, Playstation 2 games. It will
support Blu-Ray DVD and include slots for a number of storage devices including
Sony Memory Sticks, SD Memory Cards and Compact Flash Cards. In addition to
playing games, watching movies and listing to music, you'll be able to view
digital pictures, video chat and surf the internet. You will be able to create a
network between your PS3 and PSP.
The PS3 using the Cell design is a multi-threading
system (it can run more than one piece of code at a time. The PS3 graphic chip,
RSX can output 1080p which is the highest High Definition format in 2005. The
Xbox 360 highest output is 1080 which is below the PS3's.
The PS3's RSX GPU has a floating point performance of 1.8 Teraflops. (A Teraflop
is equivalent to 1,024 Gigaflops, nearly 6 DVDs worth of data every second.
The cell takes the load of the RSX.
PS3 will ship with a built-in gigabit Ethernet port and can handle both types of
wireless access, 802.11b and 802.11g.
PS3 has a total of six USB ports, four at the front and another two on the rear
of the console. These USB ports maybe used for Eyetoy cameras, wired
controllers, microphones and racing wheels.
PS3 will use Wireless Controller that uses Bluetooth technology to allow you to
set up seven controllers at one time.
PS3 will have the ability to use two HDTV screens at once. You'll be able to
stretch the image across both screens, use them to see different game
information or perhaps video chat with your friends while you play on the other
screen.
